Delhi Ensures Free Ration Distribution Amid Floods and Heavy Rains
In the midst of ongoing flood relief efforts in Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta took stock of operations on Sunday. Meanwhile, Food and Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa checked the progress of ration distribution under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). This comes as heavy rains continue to challenge the city, but authorities are working hard to keep essential supplies flowing.
Sirsa highlighted that the September ration quota under NFSA is available for free to all eligible beneficiaries, including migrants covered by the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) scheme. "We’re making sure food reaches everyone who needs it without any delays," he assured.
He directed officials to keep fair price shops running smoothly and prevent any shortages. Through teamwork with the Revenue Department, the government is also distributing ready-to-eat food packets to those affected by floods. Despite the downpours, ration distribution has stayed on track, Sirsa noted.
Officials updated the minister that about 57 percent of the September ration quota is already out, with 1,45,610 people under the ONORC scheme picking up their shares so far. The Food and Supplies Department supplies raw essentials like wheat, rice, and sugar to over 72,77,975 NFSA beneficiaries. This includes Priority Households (PR/PRS) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families, following allocations from the Government of India.
To boost transparency, Sirsa ordered fair price shops to display key details on boards outside. This includes info on Vigilance Committees, category-wise entitlements, stock levels, beneficiary numbers, helpline contacts, and more. He also stressed prominently showing ONORC eligibility details to help everyone access benefits easily.
Praising the efforts, Sirsa said Delhi leads the nation in ONORC ration distribution to migrants, thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. "Our coordinated work shows our dedication to supporting citizens during tough weather like these floods and heavy rains. We have strong systems to deliver food right where it’s needed," he added.
This smooth rollout of free ration under NFSA and ONORC highlights Delhi’s commitment to food security, especially for vulnerable groups amid natural challenges.
