Dhanbad – Four of the six teenagers who went missing while taking a holy dip in the Damodar River near Telmocho Bridge on the Dhanbad‑Bokaro highway were found dead on Thursday. Police and local divers are still looking for the two who are missing.
One of the bodies was identified as Vijay Yadav, a resident of Bhuli A‑Block. Villagers and divers, who came from the surrounding villages, are continuing their search.
The youths were gathered for Kartik Purnima, the full‑moon festival, when they went to the river. Two groups of about ten each arrived at Telmocho. The first group, from Bhimkanali under Baghmara police station, entered the water around 11 a.m. A strong current swept away five of them. Three were pulled to safety, but two – Sumit Rai (17) and Sunny Chauhan (21) – remained missing.
The second group, from Bhuli A‑Block, entered with Vijay Yadav, Rohit (aka Chhotu), Rohan (aka Golu), and Anish. Priyanshu stayed on the bank while the four went in. When they didn’t return, Priyanshu searched for them and later alerted their families.
The search was hampered until Thursday morning, when the bodies could not be located. Locals, angry for not seeing the missing youths, blocked the Dhanbad‑Bokaro main road and demanded a stronger rescue effort. Police and administrative officials persuaded the crowd to remove the blockade.
Residents blamed illegal sand mining in the Damodar for changing the river’s depth and flow, which they say raises the risk of drownings. They called for stricter enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
Baghmara Block Development Officer Girjanand Kisku said six youths from Bhimkanali and Bhuli lost their lives, and four bodies have been recovered so far. He added that a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has not yet arrived, but the search will intensify once they do.
