Chhattisgarh: Woman Maoist with ₹5 lakh bounty killed in Sukma encounter

Maoist with Rs 5 Lakh Bounty Killed in Chhattisgarh Encounter

In a major operation against Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district, security forces gunned down a woman Naxal on Thursday. The Maoist, identified as Buski Nuppo, carried a reward of Rs 5 lakhs on her head and faced charges in nine serious cases across Sukma and Dantewada districts.

Buski Nuppo, aged 35, belonged to the Malangir Area Committee of the Maoist group. She hailed from Rewali village under Aranpur police station in Dantewada district. Police sources revealed she was involved in seven cases at Aranpur, one at Kunnakonda, and one at Gadirras police station.

The encounter unfolded in the dense jungle hills between Gufdi and Peramapara villages, under the Gadiras police station limits. Acting on specific intelligence about Maoist presence, a team from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) launched a search operation. Things heated up quickly when the forces clashed with the armed group.

After the gunfire stopped, security personnel searched the spot and found Buski’s body along with a cache of weapons and explosives. They recovered a .315 bore rifle, five .315 rifle cartridges, a wireless set, eight detonators, about 10 meters of Cordex wire, four gelatin rods, a backpack, gunpowder, a radio, Naxalite literature, and other everyday items.

Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavhan shared details with , saying the operation targeted active Maoists in the area. "This is a big blow to the Maoist network in the region," he added.

Meanwhile, in a related development, 12 Naxals surrendered to authorities in neighboring Narayanpur district on the same day. The group, including five women and seven men, had a combined bounty of Rs 18 lakhs. They were linked to key Maoist units in the Indravati and East Bastar regions, hotspots for Naxal activities.

Narayanpur SP Robinson Guria confirmed the surrenders, noting that two were ECMs (Explosive Chain Members) in their outfits. "One belonged to Platoon 16, whose commander we took down in a recent operation," Guria told . Officials believe these surrenders signal growing fatigue among lower-rung cadres.

Inspector General of Police for Bastar Range, Sundarraj P, urged remaining Maoists to lay down arms. "Come back to the mainstream and benefit from the government’s rehabilitation schemes. Violence has no future," he appealed.

These events highlight ongoing anti-Naxal efforts in Chhattisgarh, where security forces continue to target Maoist strongholds in Bastar. With more operations underway, the region sees a mix of encounters and voluntary surrenders, offering hope for peace.
