Activist Sonam Wangchuk made it clear on Thursday that the Congress party played no part in the recent protests rocking Ladakh. Speaking to in Leh, he pushed back against claims from BJP leader Amit Malviya, who accused a Congress councillor of stirring up the crowds that targeted a BJP office earlier this week.
The trouble started when large protests in Leh turned violent on Wednesday. Demonstrators clashed with police as they demanded statehood for Ladakh and protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The unrest led to damage at the BJP office and the Hill Council, heightening tensions in the region.
Malviya pointed the finger at Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepag, a Congress councillor from Upper Leh Ward. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he claimed Tsepag was leading the mob and tied it to Rahul Gandhi’s influence, asking if this was the kind of chaos Gandhi had in mind.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey jumped in too, tagging Gandhi on X. He blamed Congress for the fire at the BJP office and warned about the risks of “playing with fire” against BJP workers.
But Wangchuk dismissed these allegations outright. “Congress was kicked out of our apex body a few weeks ago to keep the movement apolitical,” he said. “They had to step back until elections wrap up, though they support the cause.”
He also called out Malviya’s evidence—a photo that Wangchuk says showed the wrong person. “That guy isn’t the councillor; he’s got distant relatives in Congress,” Wangchuk explained. “Now police are harassing him and his family, even beating them. If BJP messed up and tried to smear Congress, they owe the country an apology.”
On the other side, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera slammed the BJP government for creating this mess. In an X post, he highlighted the tragic loss of lives and broken promises from 2019, when Parliament assured peace after changes in Jammu and Kashmir. “Six years on, violence has spread to Jammu and Ladakh,” Khera wrote. He urged compassion for Ladakh’s push for Sixth Schedule inclusion, dignity, and identity protection, calling it a legitimate demand ignored by the Centre.
As Ladakh protests continue to simmer, the blame game between BJP and Congress shows no signs of cooling down, with locals focused on their fight for autonomy and safeguards.
