In Uttar Pradesh, a shocking jail attack on former minister Gayatri Prajapati has sparked outrage and calls for a full probe. The Samajwadi Party leader, who has been behind bars since his 2017 arrest on rape charges, ended up in the hospital after a fight with another inmate in Lucknow Prison.
Authorities say the incident happened Tuesday when Prajapati got into a scuffle with a prisoner on cleaning duty at the jail hospital. That inmate, furious during the argument, grabbed the sliding part of a cupboard and struck Prajapati, causing injuries. Jail officials quickly treated him, and the Director General of Prisons confirmed Prajapati is now fully recovered and back in good health.
But Prajapati tells a different story. Speaking to , he described the attacker as a “vicious criminal” named Biswas, who’s been locked up for years. “It was sudden—I had no disputes with anyone,” Prajapati said. “I’m just happy my life was saved.”
The attack has political leaders fired up. Samajwadi Party MP Babu Singh Kushwaha slammed the violence, saying, “We strongly condemn this. Such things shouldn’t happen in jail.” He demanded an immediate investigation to figure out who was behind it and why—whether it stemmed from a personal clash or a bigger conspiracy. Kushwaha also called for action against the jail administration to prevent future risks.
SP chief Akhilesh Yadav went further, pushing for a judicial inquiry into the “deadly attack” on Prajapati, a former MLA and minister. “A fair probe is essential,” Yadav stated. “No one feels safe anywhere in UP right now.”
Prajapati’s troubles date back to 2017, when a woman from Chitrakoot accused him and six aides of gang-raping her and trying to assault her minor daughter while he served as a minister. The case landed him in prison, where this latest Uttar Pradesh jail assault has now raised fresh questions about inmate safety and prison security.
