South Africa’s captain Temba Bavuma made headlines again after winning the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). He scored 66 runs in the final at Lord’s despite a hamstring injury, sharing a key partnership with Aiden Markram that helped South Africa chase down 282 runs against Australia.
Bavuma’s knock came two months after South Africa beat Australia at Lord’s – a match that gave the team its first major world title in any format. The two leaders were both celebrated for their performance, but Bavuma was especially proud of his resilience.
During the CEAT Cricket Ratings Awards in Mumbai on Oct. 8, Bavuma said he has had many injuries in his career. “It’s not unusual in the game,” he told reporters. “But when you’re in a tight spot and leading the team to win, you don’t just walk away.” He added that, even while hurting, he wanted to support Markram and keep the partnership going. “You have to be brave in those special situations,” he said.
In a quieter moment, Bavuma defended his decision to stay on the field and played the whole innings for the good of the team. “I am glad I made that decision,” he said. He credited Markram’s “really good batting” and said that being there for him was what mattered.
The award ceremony saw Bavuma receive the Exemplary Leadership honor. He finished the WTC 2023‑25 cycle as South Africa’s top scorer with 711 runs in eight Tests. His average of 59.25 included two centuries and five fifties across 13 innings.
South Africa returned to world‑class cricket after 1992, surviving many nail‑biting losses in ICC events. Their victory at Lord’s and the triumph at the CEAT Awards underline the team’s growing confidence and Bavuma’s leadership on and off the field.
