270 Indian nationals repatriated from Thailand by IAF flights in coordinated effort

Indian nationals who slipped into Thailand from Myanmar are being flown home

At least 270 Indian citizens, including 26 women, were flown back to India from Mae Sot in Thailand on two special Indian Air Force (IAF) flights, officials at the Indian Embassy in Bangkok said Thursday.

The embassy and the consulate in Chiang Mai worked hand‑in‑hand with Thai government agencies to carry out the repatriation. Most of the Indians had crossed the border at Myawaddy in Myanmar, where they were linked to cyber‑scam operations. They were detained in Thailand for violating immigration rules after entering the country illegally.

India is also helping other Indians who are still in Myanmar and who may be involved in similar scam activities. The embassy has urged all nationals abroad to double‑check any foreign employer’s credentials and the background of recruiters before accepting overseas jobs.

“The visa‑free entry for Indian passport holders is intended only for tourism and short‑term business trips,” the embassy warned on X. “It should not be used to take up employment in Thailand.”

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the government has been working closely with Thai authorities to speed up the return of these citizens. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told reporters that the mission in Thailand is verifying the origins of the detainees and will arrange their repatriation once legal steps in Thailand are completed.

India’s diplomatic mission will continue to collaborate with host governments to protect its citizens and prevent misuse of visa rules in both Thailand and Myanmar.
