Seoul, Oct 12 – Security at Incheon International Airport, the busiest gateway in South Korea, has tightened it’s surveillance after a sharp drop in illegal drone flights over the summer.
Between January and September this year, airport officials logged only eight unauthorized drone incursions in a 9.3‑km radius around the runway. That’s a steep fall from 24 drones spotted last year, 74 in 2020, and 119 in 2021.
Airport authorities say the downward trend is thanks to a tougher Aviation Safety Act, which hikes fines for illegal drone use and boosts public notices about no‑fly zones. Ongoing awareness campaigns also play a role, officials added.
The drop in drone incidents comes as passenger traffic surges. During the eight‑day Chuseok holiday, Incheon handled a record‑high average of 217,613 travellers per day, up 6.4 percent from last year’s 204 100. In total, 1.74 million people used the airport from Oct 2‑9.
The average daily traffic is the highest seen for the Chuseok weekend since the airport opened in 2001, and only one holiday—Lunar New Year—has surpassed it, with a record 219,026 daily passengers.
Majorities of holiday traffic were headed to Southeast Asia (448,081 travellers), followed closely by Japan (431,827) and China (296,168).
The data was released by Incheon International Airport Corp. and read out by the Korea News Agency (Yonhap).
