Bengaluru Traffic Woes: Officials Gear Up for Major Road Fixes to Ease Congestion
Bengaluru’s notorious traffic jams could soon see some relief, thanks to quick action from top officials. Karnataka’s Additional Chief Secretary for Urban Development, Tushar Giri Nath, has ordered a slew of infrastructure upgrades to smooth out the chaos on the city’s busy roads.
During a hands-on inspection on Thursday, Giri Nath teamed up with experts from various departments to check the Outer Ring Road from Silk Board Junction to Hebbal Junction. They brainstormed real solutions to keep vehicles moving without the usual gridlock. This push comes as part of a bigger plan to tackle Bengaluru traffic congestion, a headache for millions of daily commuters.
Giri Nath didn’t hold back on instructions. He urged teams to fix potholes right away, resurface rough roads, upgrade tricky junctions, speed up white-topping projects, and sort out drainage issues to stop waterlogging. Special attention went to spots hit hard by ongoing Metro construction, where roads need better upkeep to avoid turning into nightmares for drivers.
Near Hosur Main Road in Shanthala Nagar, where Metro work is underway, officials got a clear directive: clear out barricades from finished sections to let traffic flow freely. Agencies like BMRCL (the Metro body), BWSSB (water board), BESCOM (power company), and others handling road digs must restore surfaces once their jobs wrap up. If their work leaves behind potholes or damage, they fix it—no excuses. Plus, every site needs clear signs naming the responsible department, so everyone knows who’s accountable.
Waterlogging at Silk Board Junction is another big culprit in Bengaluru’s traffic mess. Giri Nath pushed for regular desilting of stormwater drains and a full redesign to upgrade the junction for good. On Agara Lake Road, white-topping work needs to pick up speed. The surrounding roads, battered for years, should get temporary patches now, with permanent fixes lined up soon.
Pedestrians aren’t forgotten either. At Iblur Junction, plans are afoot for a new skywalk to keep walkers safe. Officials must also fight waterlogging there and aim for a complete makeover. They’re even studying a "magic box" underpass to boost vehicle movement—a smart fix for this hotspot.
In a game-changer for the Outer Ring Road, Giri Nath called for access ramps at 20 key spots. These will help cars switch smoothly between service roads and the main lanes, potentially cutting congestion by 30-40%. Designs will come together with input from the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) and traffic police, and implementation starts ASAP.
Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao joined the drive and spotted terrible road conditions on Langford Road in Shanthala Nagar. He snapped photos on his phone and sent them straight to the right teams for urgent repairs—talk about leading from the front!
At Agara Junction, a busted pipe on the flyover is letting rainwater splash onto the road below, making things slippery and dangerous. Teams must replace it pronto. The flyover’s lower deck looks rough too, so it needs milling and patching with eco-friendly materials to plug those pesky potholes.
These steps show Bengaluru’s leaders are serious about fixing the city’s traffic congestion and road infrastructure woes. With Metro projects, drainage upgrades, and smarter designs on the horizon, commuters might finally catch a break from the daily snarl-ups. Stay tuned for updates on how these changes roll out.
