Telangana’s Excise Department wrapped up a major crackdown on illicit liquor in Hyderabad and Rangareddy districts, scoring big wins against bootleggers. From September 15 to 30, officials registered 105 cases and seized about 2,290 bottles of illegal booze—totaling around 1,700 liters—plus 3,000 kilograms of black jaggery used to make the stuff. The haul’s worth? Roughly Rs 1 crore.
P. Dasaratha, the Deputy Commissioner of Prohibition & Excise for Rangareddy district, told reporters that the drive involved nearly 50 special task force teams from both Hyderabad and Rangareddy. “Most of this illicit liquor comes in illegally from places like Goa, Delhi, and Haryana,” he said. He stressed how this underground trade harms public health and urged people to steer clear of non-duty-paid alcohol. “Don’t transport or drink it—protect your health and report it,” Dasaratha added.
This effort highlights the ongoing battle against illegal liquor production and smuggling in Telangana, which often leads to serious health risks from contaminated brews.
In related news from neighboring Andhra Pradesh, Excise teams last month smashed several illicit liquor operations in Hukumpeta Mandal of Alluri district. Led by Paderu Excise CI Acharya, the raids near Raatuluputtu village destroyed about 5,000 liters of jaggery wash ready for brewing “sara” (local toddy) and some finished batches. Local police joined in to target these hidden units.
