Bangladesh Election to Happen by February 2026, Says Government Spokesman Amid Political Tensions
Dhaka, Sep 12: In the middle of heated debates among Bangladesh’s political parties about when to hold the next general elections, the interim government’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has a clear message: polls will go ahead by February 15, 2026, no matter what.
Speaking to reporters in Sreepur Upazila, Magura district, Alam stressed that the interim government sticks to its election schedule. "Parties exist because of differing views—if everyone agreed, there’d be no need for separate ones," he said, as quoted by leading Bengali daily Jugantor. "But let me repeat: elections will happen by February 15."
Alam didn’t hold back on warnings either. He made it clear that no one should try to mess with the process. "Postponing the election? Not a chance. Any sneaky moves to disrupt it will fail," he declared. He added that this vote isn’t just about picking leaders—it’s key to shaping Bangladesh’s future government, future polls, and the whole political setup.
This comes after Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus echoed the same urgency earlier this month. Yunus told local media that sticking to the February 2026 timeline is crucial for national stability. Delays or disruptions could spell trouble for the country, he warned.
Alam backed Yunus’s words during recent meetings with major players like the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Islamist group Jamaat-e-Islami, and the National Citizen Party (NCP) at his Dhaka residence. "Elections are the only way forward," Alam quoted Yunus as saying, according to The Daily Star. "Thinking of alternatives would be a disaster for Bangladesh."
The drama stems from big disagreements on election timing and reforms. Jamaat-e-Islami and NCP want the July Charter reforms in place first, while BNP pushes hard for the polls to stay on track without any delays.
Bangladesh has faced a lot of uncertainty since last year’s violent protests toppled the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. That ouster left the nation in limbo over its next general elections, with everyone watching closely for signs of stability.
