‘They received votes when ballot boxes were looted’: BJP’s Sudhanshu Trivedi attacks Cong

New Delhi, Dec 11 (LatestNewsX) – In a Rajya Sabha session debating election reform, BJP parliamentarian Dr Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that India is the only “vibrant living democracy” stretching from Eastern Europe to Japan. He highlighted that although Australia and Japan meet the definition of democracies, India’s depth and energy set it apart.

Trivedi drew attention to a Freedom House report, using it to illustrate a historical link between Hindu culture and democratic norms. According to him, India’s ancient civilizational values had long fostered civic ideals even before modern institutions existed. He recounted that Dr B.R. Ambedkar first filed an election complaint after a loss in his district, and noted that Jawaharlal Nehru once wrote to Lord Mountbatten acknowledging the Congress win in Bombay and remarked that Ambedkar was “joining hands with Hindu communists”.

The MP went on to point out long‑standing electoral shortcomings, citing the Emergency period when Indira Gandhi’s victory was legally challenged. He reminded that electronic voting machines (EVMs) entered official use under Rajiv Gandhi, marking a technological milestone for voting in India.

According to Trivedi, the era of Congress dominance faded once protective measures such as CCTV coverage, voter‑ID cards, free media, an independent judiciary, and rising literacy were fully implemented. “They received votes when ballot boxes were looted, booths were seized, bullets flew, and people died,” he asserted, adding emphatically, “That era will not come back.”

He criticized the Congress for failing to realise that today’s electoral success hinges not on manipulation but on “deep bonds and trust” between leaders and the electorate. The BJP’s recent wins, he said, stem from genuine rapport with voters rather than the corruption that tarnished earlier contests.

Trivedi’s remarks added fire to the parliamentary debate, with the ruling party contrasting its vision of electoral integrity against what it portrays as the Congress legacy of questionable practices. sktr/dpb
