On Monday, Uma Bharti, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and a senior BJP figure, told LatestNewsX that she had been targeted with “threatening tones” on social media after she voiced opposition to a rumored plan to build a mosque in West Bengal named after Mughal emperor Babur.
On the platform X she added that her office had already forwarded the details of these threats to the Madhya Pradesh Intelligence Bureau. She explained that when she responded to the announcement of a structure bearing Babur’s name, the backlash included some trolling and a threatening tone, but she said such incidents are not uncommon and her office consistently reports them to the Intelligence Bureau.
“I have complete faith in the Intelligence Bureau. If there is any seriousness, they will investigate,” she wrote.
Earlier the same week, on Sunday, Bharti had warned that any attempt to construct a mosque named after Babur would “meet the same fate as Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.” She clarified that while mosques built for genuine worship and Islam would be respected, those bearing Babur’s name would not.
The BJP veteran, long associated with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, was responding to reports that Trinamool Congress leader Humayun Kabir had announced plans for a “Babri Masjid” in West Bengal. Bharti urged Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to act against such statements, saying, “You also have a responsibility for the honour and harmony of Bengal and the country.”
