Thunderstorms, rain forecast for TN, Puducherry for next two days

Chennai, Dec 8 (LatestNewsX) – Chennai’s Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a forecast calling for moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday and Tuesday, urging residents to keep an eye on evolving weather.

The weather office released its Monday‑morning update saying that rain will be scattered to fairly widespread across several districts, mainly kicking off in the afternoon and evening.

Meteorologists say the unsettled spell is due to a mix of local atmospheric instability and moisture entering from the Bay of Bengal, conditions that favor thunderstorm formation. Interior districts of Tamil Nadu—including sections of the Cauvery delta, the western zones, and the southern districts—could see intermittent showers and occasional lightning.

Puducherry and nearby coastlines may experience brief periods of moderate rain along with gusty winds.

Maximum temperatures are projected to stay a tad below normal because of cloud cover and rainfall, while minimums should remain comparatively steady. The department has advised farmers, fishermen, and outdoor workers to take necessary safety measures.

People are cautioned against seeking shelter under trees during thunderstorms, and those living in low‑lying areas should monitor for local waterlogging. Fishermen are urged to check current advisories before heading to sea, as squally winds and rough conditions are anticipated during storm bursts.

A few days ago, isolated pockets within Tamil Nadu already received short spells of rain, giving much‑needed relief from dryness but also causing temporary traffic disruptions in urban centres. Officials noted that the current rainfall is unlikely to be extremely heavy, though lightning activity could pose localized hazards.

The next 48 hours of rain should benefit standing crops in numerous interior districts, especially paddy fields and horticultural plantations that have faced fluctuating moisture levels recently. Agricultural officers, however, cautioned farmers to ensure adequate drainage to avoid damage from stagnant water.

The Chennai office has pledged to closely monitor developments and issue fresh warnings if the system intensifies. District administrations have been asked to prepare for swift response to any weather‑related emergencies over the next two days.
