A Tipra Motha Party MLA from Tripura claims he was threatened at the MLA hostel, raising serious security concerns. The incident took place on Monday night in the New Capital Complex near Tripura’s government offices, prompting police to investigate.
According to police, they are actively working to identify the three or four people involved. The MLA, Philip Kumar Reang, who represents Kanchanpur, says he was talking outside his room when a group of inebriated youths threatened him. Reang shared on Facebook that the attackers made life-threatening remarks and warned they could bring 500 people to the hostel next time.
Reang told the media, “They threatened to chop my head. Who is responsible for their security? They might have come to meet BJP MLA Promode Reang, who also stays at the hostel.” He has filed an FIR with the police demanding action against the suspects.
The incident has sparked concern among legislators, prompting a six-member delegation to meet Chief Minister Manik Saha. They urged him to ensure better security at the MLA hostel. Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma and Reang were part of this delegation. Debbarma said, “This was a serious security lapse. The Chief Minister assured us he will look into the matter carefully.”
To assess the security situation, Tripura’s Director General of Police Anurag visited the hostel with senior officials. He confirmed that the police are investigating and said the fight involved Reang and some unidentified youths. Only guests of MLAs are usually allowed inside, emphasizing that police are taking the matter very seriously.
The MLA hostel has 45 rooms, with 40 allocated to legislators from different parties, including BJP, Tipra Motha, CPI-M, and Congress. This incident highlights the need for tighter security to protect Tripura’s lawmakers, especially after the threat made against Reang. Authorities are working to ensure such security lapses do not happen again.
