TN BJP chief meets EPS in Salem, sparks political curiosity in state politics

In Chennai on September 21, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami, often called EPS, met with Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran in Salem. The private chat lasted about an hour and included BJP’s state in-charge Aravind Menon and vice president K.P. Ramalingam.

Afterward, Nagenthran spoke to reporters and brushed off any big political buzz. “It was just a courtesy visit,” he said. “I met EPS to show respect, and we didn’t talk politics at all.” He also shot down rumors that Union Home Minister Amit Shah or the BJP had anything to do with AIADMK’s internal issues. “BJP stays out of other parties’ business,” Nagenthran added firmly.

When asked about possible AIADMK reunification or a new alliance, he kept it vague: “Only time will tell.” This meeting happens amid growing speculation about changing alliances in Tamil Nadu politics, especially with the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon.

Lately, actor Vijay shook things up by launching his new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). He aims to challenge the ruling DMK head-on. Nagenthran commented on Vijay’s move: “Tamil Nadu will see a government change for sure. But it’s too soon to tell if TVK really threatens the DMK. Launching a party and attracting crowds doesn’t make you a strong opposition overnight.”

On worries that multiple opposition parties could split anti-DMK votes, Nagenthran stayed neutral. “Politics has no permanent friends or enemies,” he noted, hinting at possible shifts in alliances as elections near.

Looking ahead, Nagenthran shared BJP’s next steps. He’ll kick off a statewide political tour from Madurai on October 11. Party sources say this tour will help position BJP as a real player in the 2026 elections and explore ties with groups like AIADMK.

With EPS keeping AIADMK independent and Vijay’s TVK set to shake up the scene, this Salem meeting adds more twists to Tamil Nadu’s lively political world.
