TN BJP flays DMK govt for ‘delayed’ paddy procurement in Nagapattinam

Chennai – Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran slammed the ruling DMK government for mishandling paddy procurement in Nagapattinam district. He blasted a ten‑day delay at direct purchase centres (DPCs) that has left farmers scrambling.

The BJP leader said over 15,000 sacks of paddy sit in storage tanks across the district, hurting thousands of farmers who have not yet received payment. “Officials point to storage problems to excuse the delay, but that is unacceptable,” Nagenthran told reporters. He warned that the government should prepare for seasonal changes in advance. The onset of the monsoon and the Deepavali festival were known weeks before, so paddy should have been bought and farmers paid before the rains.

“Instead, the DMK’s inefficiency has let harvested paddy rot in the open,” he added. He called Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s approach “publicity‑driven” and criticized the administration for spending heavily on image building while ignoring farmers’ basic needs. “Stalin talks like a ‘son of the Delta’, but the Delta farmers still face a backlog that needs immediate action.”

Nagenthran urged the government to deploy enough staff and transport to clear the DPC backlog quickly. “If the CM takes the title of a ‘Delta son’ seriously, he must order rapid paddy procurement and protect farmers’ livelihoods,” he said. He warned that continued inaction could worsen the crisis for farmers across the Delta region.

The news comes amid growing pressure on the DMK for agricultural reform. Tamil Nadu’s paddy market remains crucial to the state’s economy, and farmers are looking for reliable support from the government. The BJP hopes the criticism will spur the cabinet to act swiftly or risk losing support from the farming community.
