The Himachal Pradesh High Court is raising alarms about the sluggish progress on slope protection along the busy Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway, where landslides keep blocking roads and putting drivers at risk.
In a recent update to the court, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) shared that they’ve tackled just nine out of 41 trouble spots on the 21-kilometer Solan-Kaithlighat section. Work continues at the other 32 sites. Overall, across the highway, NHAI has finished protections at 28 of 42 identified locations, with the rest slated to wrap up by March 16, 2026.
The court pointed out that NHAI earlier boasted about completing work at 17 spots and setting up seven diversions between Solan and Kaithlighat. But judges noted a lack of clear info on whether those diversions have decreased.
Even after giving NHAI plenty of time and warnings, the court called the pace “unsatisfactory.” Debris keeps tumbling down from untreated areas, and at one site, the protective netting has already given way under sliding soil.
This vital route through Himachal Pradesh sees heavy traffic but faces constant disruptions from monsoon-triggered landslides. The High Court continues to keep a close eye on NHAI’s efforts to fix the safety issues.
