Chennai, Nov 29 – The Tamil Nadu government issued a warning on Saturday, urging residents to stockpile essential supplies as Cyclone Ditwah, which has already wreaked havoc along Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, keeps pushing northeast across the Bay of Bengal toward the state.
According to officials, next‑day weather will bring torrential rain and strong winds, so people in the most vulnerable districts are advised to prepare early. Authorities stress that households should hold enough drinking water, milk, fresh produce, medicines, candles, batteries and other basic items.
The government also asked citizens to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid unnecessary travel once the cyclone hits its peak. In response, several schools and colleges in the affected areas were given a holiday on Saturday.
Wind gusts, rough seas and heavy downpours could upend daily life, especially along coastlines and low‑lying stretches. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Ditwah is still making its way over the Bay after wreaking havoc in Sri Lanka.
With the storm closing in on the Tamil Nadu coast, many districts have been put on high alert and a red‑alert warning has been issued for those expected to receive very heavy to extremely heavy rain. Fishermen are forbidden from venturing out to sea because of towering waves and treacherous conditions, while coastal residents have been told to stay clear of beaches, parks and other open recreation spots for the time being.
People living near unstable buildings, large trees or overhead power lines have been cautioned to remain vigilant; those in flood‑prone or water‑logged areas are urged to prepare for the possibility of evacuation. Rescue teams are already on the ground in vulnerable districts, and emergency shelters and relief camps are being organized.
Officials remind the public to disregard unverified social media chatter and to follow only official government directives and IMD updates. Prioritizing life safety, the state government continues to monitor the situation, coordinate across departments, and keep rapid‑response protocols ready.
