TN on alert as 3 weather systems intensify; cyclone likely over south Bay of Bengal in 48 hrs

Chennai, Nov. 24 (LatestNewsX) – Tamil Nadu is preparing for an extended bout of heavy rain as three powerful weather systems over the Indian Ocean continue to strengthen, with a possible cyclonic storm forming over the south Bay of Bengal within the next two days.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has released a series of alerts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters, RMC Director A. Amudha explained that three cyclonic circulations have emerged over different parts of the Indian Ocean. A deep depression that first appeared over the Andaman Sea on Sunday is now moving west‑northwest and lies over the waters near Malaysia and the Malacca Strait. It is likely to head further west‑northwest, deepen into a depression again over the south Andaman Sea within 24 hours, and then ramp up into a cyclonic storm over the south Bay of Bengal within 48 hours, she said.

Meanwhile, the low‑pressure trough that has lingered over the Kanyakumari region remains active and is expected to spawn a new low‑pressure area on Nov. 25 over the Kanyakumari Sea and neighboring southwest Sri Lankan waters of the Bay of Bengal, with the potential to intensify further.

A third atmospheric disturbance over the Arabian Sea is also standing in place, giving rise to a rare trio of interconnected systems that could influence each other’s motion and strength. “There are indications that these systems may interact with each other, influencing their movement and intensity,” Amudha added.

Tamil Nadu has already seen widespread heavy rain in the past 24 hours as the northeast monsoon intensified. Four locations recorded very heavy rainfall, 15 registered heavy showers, and 76 enjoyed moderate to heavy rainfall.

The RMC has put Tenkasi and Tirunelveli on orange alerts, where isolated spots—especially in hilly areas—may experience heavy to extremely heavy rain. Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Ramanathapuram are forecast to see heavy showers on Nov. 25. Nov. 26 will bring heavy rain to seven districts, followed by stronger downpours over Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam on Nov. 27.

On Nov. 28, the IMD has issued orange alerts for Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, and warns of very heavy rain across seven northern coastal districts on Nov. 29. The Meteorological Centre urges residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and heed official guidance as these weather systems evolve.
