The Tamil Nadu government is moving fast to build a new green‑field airport near Hosur. Within the next two weeks, it will ask the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for site clearance.
The project, first announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin last year, aims to create a major gateway for southern Tamil Nadu and the nearby parts of Karnataka. The new airport would sit on about 2,000 acres in the Berigai‑Bagalur area of Krishnagiri district, right next to the thriving industrial hub of Hosur.
Why Hosur? A technical review found Berigai‑Bagalur a better fit than Bendagondapalli near the Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Limited airfield. The site offers fewer topographical challenges and smoother operations.
The new hub is designed to handle up to 30 million passengers a year—surpassing Chennai Airport’s 22 million in 2023. Once open, it will ease congestion at Chennai and boost industrial, logistics, and passenger traffic across the Krishnagiri–Dharmapuri–Salem corridor.
The state is already preparing a detailed land‑development plan. Krishnagiri officials expect to begin land acquisition in the next four months.
Chief obstacles remain regulatory. Under an existing agreement, no new commercial airport can be built within 150 km of Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) until 2033. Hosur’s proximity to Karnataka puts it just inside this exclusion zone, which could slow or block approval.
To address this, the Tamil Nadu government has approached the Defence Ministry for an adjustment of airspace restrictions. Much of Krishnagiri’s airspace falls under the jurisdiction of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), so a relaxation could clear a major hurdle.
Despite these challenges, officials say Hosur’s strategic location and the area’s industrial importance make the project a strong candidate for central approval. Once sanctioned, the airport could become one of Tamil Nadu’s most ambitious aviation projects, linking the state more closely to national and regional travel markets.
