Chennai’s weather office is predicting a fresh low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal this Wednesday, which could mean more rain for Tamil Nadu and other southern states in the days ahead.

Officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai say an atmospheric circulation is already building over the northern Andaman Sea. By October 2, this should turn into a low-pressure system in the central Bay of Bengal and nearby north Andaman Sea. It might get stronger and shake up weather across South India, bringing scattered showers, thunder, and gusty winds to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Right now, widespread circulation is stirring things up in these areas, leading to moderate rain with occasional lightning flashes on Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect this pattern to linger in isolated spots of Tamil Nadu until at least October 5, as part of the early northeast monsoon activity.

In the last 24 hours up to Tuesday morning, the Nilgiris district saw the heaviest downpours, with 4 cm of rain in the Bandalur taluk office area. Other spots like Avalanche and Cherumuli in Nilgiris, Yercaud in Salem, and Mullanginavilai in Kanyakumari each got 3 cm. This steady Tamil Nadu rainfall has kept soil moist in the hilly regions, but experts warn of landslide risks in vulnerable spots—stay cautious if you’re in those areas.

The RMC urges fishermen and coastal folks to watch out for rough seas, with squally weather likely over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. Winds could pick up along Tamil Nadu’s coast and nearby waters as the system develops. Meteorologists note that we’ll know more about its path and strength in the next day or two, but it looks set to deliver wet weather to northern coastal Tamil Nadu and inland districts.

Local authorities are monitoring for possible flooding and have told district teams to be ready. This low-pressure area signals that the northeast monsoon could ramp up later in October, keeping the Bay of Bengal active with more rain on the horizon for South India.
