Trinamool Congress leaders in West Bengal keep drawing parallels between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the country’s legendary spiritual figures. The latest example comes from party Rajya Sabha member Ritabrata Banerjee, who called her an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu during a rally in Bangaon, North 24 Parganas district, on Saturday evening.
Banerjee spoke out against the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking people in BJP-ruled states. He praised Mamata Banerjee as India’s only leader uniting folks against communal and caste divides. “Like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who shattered barriers of caste and religion, lakhs of people follow our Chief Minister wherever she goes,” he said. “Just as crowds trailed Chaitanya on his walks, huge rallies now flock to Mamata Didi. In that sense, she’s the modern-day Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.”
This isn’t the first time TMC bigwigs have made such comparisons. Back in December 2023, State Education Minister Bratya Basu also dubbed Mamata Banerjee an incarnation of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He pointed to her push for religious unity and inclusiveness, mirroring the saint’s teachings.
That same month, TMC General Secretary Kunal Ghosh went further. He likened Mamata Banerjee to saint Ramakrishna Paramhansa and her nephew, party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, to Swami Vivekananda. “If Mamata is Ramakrishna, Abhishek is Vivekananda—his most devoted disciple,” Ghosh explained. “Bengal’s people see Mamata’s sacrifices and contributions shining through Abhishek, just like Vivekananda carried forward his guru’s legacy.”
Earlier, in June 2022, TMC MLA Nirmal Maji from Uluberia called Mamata Banerjee the incarnation of Maa Sarada, spiritual consort of Ramakrishna Paramhansa. Maji even claimed Maa Sarada once prophesied her rebirth near Kolkata’s Kalighat Kali Temple—right where Mamata Banerjee’s home stands today. But that drew sharp criticism. Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission, issued a strong objection to Maji’s remarks.
Then, in July 2023, MLA Biswajit Das from Bagda compared Mamata Banerjee to Rani Rashmoni, the famed philanthropist who built Kolkata’s iconic Dakshineswar Kali Temple, closely linked to Ramakrishna Paramhansa.
These nods to spiritual icons highlight how TMC leaders portray Mamata Banerjee as a unifying force in West Bengal politics, blending faith with her fight for social harmony.
