PM Modi Heads to Kolkata for Key Military Conference Amid Tight Security and Traffic Shifts
Kolkata is gearing up for a major event as Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the city from Sunday evening through Monday afternoon. Expect heavy security measures and traffic diversions across key areas to ensure smooth proceedings during his trip.
The Prime Minister’s Office announced that PM Modi will kick off the 16th Combined Commanders’ Conference 2025 in Kolkata. This high-level meetup gathers India’s top military and civilian leaders to discuss strategies for boosting the nation’s defense capabilities. True to his vision of a strong, secure, and self-reliant India, PM Modi will inaugurate the event and deliver a key address.
Held every two years, this year’s conference runs from September 15 to 17 in Kolkata. The theme, ‘Year of Reforms – Transforming for the Future,’ spotlights reforms, tech upgrades, and better integration across the armed forces. Leaders will dive into ways to keep India’s military agile and ready for any global challenges, focusing on operational preparedness and multi-domain strategies.
Joining PM Modi at the discussions are big names like Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff Anil Chauhan, and Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. Senior officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Integrated Defence Staff will also participate.
Here’s PM Modi’s packed schedule in Kolkata: He lands at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at 5:35 p.m. on Sunday, heads out by 5:40 p.m., and arrives at Raj Bhavan in central Kolkata by 6:10 p.m. He’ll spend the night there. On Monday morning at 9:30 a.m., PM Modi will visit Fort William’s Vijay Durg—home to the Indian Army’s Eastern Command—to launch the conference. The sessions should wrap up around 1 p.m., after which he’ll depart for the airport at 1:40 p.m. and fly to Bihar.
With such a high-profile visit, Kolkata Police have rolled out strict traffic rules to avoid any hitches. Their advisory, released late Saturday, bans all goods vehicles on major routes from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday—on top of regular curbs.
Affected roads include VIP Road, Ultadanga New Flyover, EM Bypass, Maa Flyover, AJC Bose Flyover, AJC Bose Road, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Khidderpore Road, J&N Island, Red Road, RR Avenue, and the Raj Bhavan South Gate.
The advisory adds that police can regulate or restrict all vehicles, including trams and carts, on these routes whenever needed. Heavy goods vehicles face extra bans near Raj Bhavan from 6 a.m. on September 14 until 10 p.m. on September 15. Plus, the stretch from Government Place East and Esplanade Row East Crossing to Old Court House Street and BBD Bag South Crossing stays fully closed from 10 p.m. on September 14 to 6 a.m. on September 15.
