Kolkata – A week after a major voter‑list audit began in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has taken the fight to the Supreme Court. The party filed a petition on Monday, just hours after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Union government of rushing the special intensive revision (SIR).
The filing was made by TMC parliamentarians Mala Roy in the Lok Sabha and Dolan Sen in the Rajya Sabha. The Supreme Court is expected to hear the case Monday night, with a decision likely to be given by Tuesday.
During a press call in Siliguri, Banerjee blasted the speed and mode of the SIR. “It’s a hurried, disruptive process that has caused fear and panic among our people,” she said. She also warned that the frenzy has led to suicides and suicide attempts among voters who feel their names may be removed from the list.
According to an insider, the petition argues that the rushed SIR may contain errors that could delete legitimate names from the voter rolls. The TMC demands that the revision be halted until the Supreme Court delivers a verdict. “Our priority is to protect the democratic rights of West Bengal voters,” the party member said, adding that the court is the only recourse left.
The TMC has opposed the SIR since it started on Nov. 4, claiming that the BJP and the central government are using the audit to push a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state. The BJP, however, argues that the criticism comes from a fear that the list will eliminate illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya voters.
The Supreme Court’s ruling will have a major impact on West Bengal’s electoral landscape and could shape how voter registration is managed in the coming years. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
