Kolkata, Oct 16 – The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is gearing up for a massive rally in Kolkata to protest the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) that the Election Commission of India plans to carry out in West Bengal. The protest is expected to take place in the first week of November, right after the festival season finishes with Kali Puja, Diwali and Bhai Dhaj.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, along with party general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, will head the rally. A senior TMC cabinet member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the leaders will outline a plan to mobilise supporters across the state in the coming months and will spell out their key arguments against the SIR.
The BJP, which is pushing for the SIR, has already warned that it could remove names from voter rolls. Leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal opposition head, and Union Minister Santanu Thakur have predicted how many voters might be deleted. The TMC has counter‑points, saying the deletion would target specific communities unfairly. Chief Minister Banerjee has said she will not accept any removal of legitimate voter names.
“We will not tolerate the deletion of a genuine voter’s name,” one TMC cabinet member said. The party’s message is that West Bengal will erupt if any valid voter is struck off the list.
TMC portrays the SIR as a “ploy” by the BJP and the central government to push a National Register of Citizens (NRC)‑style audit in the state. The BJP, on the other hand, claims that Banerjee’s opposition helps keep names of alleged infiltrators – such as Bangladeshi and Rohingya residents – on the rolls.
The forthcoming rally will be a major political event, with the TMC calling on citizens to join a nationwide anti‑SIR movement and protect the integrity of the voter register in West Bengal.
