Tripura: 14-month-old child raped and murdered, maternal grandfather held

Agartala, Oct 12 – A 14‑month‑old baby was brutally raped, killed and buried, one of her own grandfathers, the police say, sparking shock and outrage across Tripura.

Police arrested the suspect, 44‑year‑old Jay Uddin, in Assam’s Nilam Bazar, Sribhumi district, and brought him back to Tripura. Uddin is a resident of Uttar Padmabil village and is the mother’s brother.

The tragedy unfolded Saturday night when the child was at her maternal uncle’s house. Her family feared the baby had gone missing after she did not return after several hours. The police, led by Sub‑Divisional Officer Rahul Balhara, launched a search with local help and found a freshly dug patch of earth near the house. “We dug there and found the body,” Balhara told reporters.

The infant’s body was recovered and sent to the Panisagar sub‑divisional hospital for a post‑mortem to confirm the cause of death and prove the assault. While reports of rape and murder have been filed, the investigation is still underway and final charges will wait on the post‑mortem results.

Uddin fled the scene but was caught Sunday afternoon in the neighboring state of Assam. He was taken to Tripura for interrogation. Police say they are working “thoroughly” to piece together the details of the crime and to bring a strong case against him.

The community is stunned by this family‑member crime, and many locals are demanding strict punishment for the accused. The investigation continues as authorities seek to bring justice to the young victim.
