Tripura BJP chief Rajib Bhattacharjee on Tuesday blasted the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) after local TMC workers attacked two party leaders in West Bengal. The incident, which happened while MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were heading to flood‑affected areas in North Bengal, has reignited criticism of what Bhattacharjee calls a culture of “hooliganism” in the state.
Bhattacharjee said the attack was brutal, describing it as “worse than how animals are treated.” He accused the TMC government of running a system of terror and urged people across West Bengal to unite against the violence. “Lawlessness must end,” he told reporters, calling on citizens to protest and restore peace.
The two leaders, both experienced BJP figures, were visiting the region to assess relief needs after severe floods on October 6. During their trip to the Jalpaiguri Dooars area, local TMC workers allegedly struck Khagen Murmu, who sustained serious head injuries, and also attacked Shankar Ghosh while he was handing out relief supplies.
Following the assault, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited Murmu in the hospital, but the violence has sparked a sharp backlash. Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the state government, accusing it of politicising the floods and failing to protect its citizens. Mamata Banerjee, in turn, said the incident was an unfortunate event that underscored the deeper political issues in West Bengal.
Bhattacharjee highlighted that West Bengal is one of India’s largest revenue contributors, yet it faces chronic unemployment, unsafe conditions for women and students, and a series of high‑profile incidents, such as those at RG Kar Medical College and Government Law College. He urged the central government to intervene and enforce order, stressing that the nation watches West Bengal’s political climate closely.
The clash between the BJP and the TMC over the attack reflects growing tension in West Bengal politics, as the ruling party faces mounting criticism for its handling of the floods, security lapses, and alleged misuse of power. The incident has added pressure on Mamata Banerjee to deliver a stable, secure administration while the BJP calls for a crackdown on alleged TMC hooliganism.
