A girl in Agartala, Tripura, was found critically injured after an alleged rape and poisoning by a man she knew. Police say the incident happened last weekend in the Rajnagar area, a suburb of western Agartala. The victim’s parents were out of town for medical treatment when the crime took place.
The accused is Shankar Das, a local fish trader who is often known as “Dadu,” a nickname the girl used for him. He lured the minor into an empty room while the family was away, then allegedly beat her and forced her to swallow a toxic pesticide. The girl was discovered in a serious condition by neighbors and rushed to IGM Hospital for emergency care. She was then transferred to GB Pant Hospital for further treatment.
Shankar Das was arrested late Saturday night by the West Agartala Women Police Station with help from Amtali Police. The officer in charge, Shiuli Das, said the suspect was taken to court the next day and that the investigation is still underway. The woman‑safety unit confirmed the girl is now stable but still receiving medical support. A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and charges of attempted murder have been filed.
The community in Rajnagar is outraged, demanding a thorough probe. Police officials assure residents that they will continue the investigation once the victim recovers. The investigation is expected to focus on the details of the assault, the alleged poisoning, and any potential witnesses. The case highlights ongoing concerns about child safety and the importance of reporting sexual abuse incidents.
