‘True strength lies in simplicity and moral conviction’, SC judges pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi

On Gandhi Jayanti, Supreme Court judges in New Delhi honored Mahatma Gandhi with floral tributes at the court’s premises. Justices Surya Kant, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, N. Kotiswar Singh, and K.V. Vishwanathan gathered to pay their respects to the Father of the Nation on October 2.
After laying flowers at Gandhi’s statue, Justice Surya Kant shared his thoughts with fellow judges and dignitaries. He described the moment as one that brought him a deep sense of peace and reflection. “Gandhi stands as our moral compass,” Justice Kant said, explaining how the leader’s ideals of truth and non-violence still shape India’s democracy today.
Justice Kant highlighted Gandhi’s role in India’s freedom struggle. He praised how Gandhi united people from all walks of life to challenge British rule. “True strength comes from simplicity and strong moral beliefs,” he noted, pointing to Gandhi’s sacrifices and his push for self-reliant villages.
For Gandhi, freedom meant more than just ending colonial rule. Justice Kant emphasized that it focused on giving dignity to the weakest in society and ensuring justice reaches those on the edges. He added that Gandhi saw justice going beyond courtroom battles—it’s about finding common ground, appealing to both hearts and minds to foster reconciliation.
Justice Kant also remembered former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, who brought Gandhi’s values into everyday governance. He recalled Shastri’s famous slogan, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” which celebrates soldiers who protect the country and farmers who feed it. “Shastri’s leadership was simple, honest, and inclusive, much like Gandhi’s dream of justice for every home and field,” Justice Kant said.
Both leaders shared a deep commitment to justice as the foundation of public life. Gandhi linked it to truth and kindness, while Shastri turned those ideas into practical policies that left no one behind.
In wrapping up, Justice Kant urged everyone to keep their legacy alive. “Gandhi and Shastri’s principles of justice, humility, and selfless service aren’t just history—they’re a guide for strengthening our democracy every day.”
