Patna, Nov 24 – A brutal night in the village of Dommanchak, under Gopalpur police jurisdiction, ended in a double tragedy. On Monday evening, two men riding motorcycles burst into the house of 80‑year‑old Asharfi Rai and opened fire. The victim tried to flee but was taken by the attackers, who then escaped. However, they did not get far. Hearing the commotion, local villagers gathered and chased them, managing to intercept them. They have lynched the attackers. The attackers were lost their lives on the spot.
The incident happened around 4:30–5 p.m., and Patna Superintendent of Police (East), Parichay Kumar, said that the shooters fled but were soon confronted by the mob. Following the violence, authorities called a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team to the scene to collect evidence. “The FSL team has recovered dead cartridges from the first crime spot. We have also recovered bricks, stones, and batons from the second crime spot.” Kumar added.
Asharfi Rai was rushed to Patna Medical College and Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The police are now racing to identify the two assailants and determine the motive. Sources hint that a land dispute worth Rs 20 crore could be behind the attack.
Municipal officials have recovered all bodies and sent them for post‑mortem examinations. The case of a murder followed by a mob lynching has sparked alarm in the capital. Early this year, when Samrat Chaudhary was sworn in as the new state Home Minister, many expected a slowdown in crime, yet this incident again throws the law‑and‑order situation into question.
Investigators say the probe is still underway and that additional details will be released as the investigation progresses.
