Unidentified gunmen ambushed a convoy of Assam Rifles troops in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday evening, killing two soldiers and wounding five others. The attack happened along the busy Imphal-Dimapur National Highway in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, a spot that’s seen its share of tension in recent Manipur violence.

The troops from the 33rd Assam Rifles were traveling between their Patsoi and Nambol bases when the assailants struck. Officials say the fighters opened fire suddenly, catching the vehicle off guard. The two killed were Naib-Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap, brave soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The injured personnel are now at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal, where doctors report they’re stable after quick evacuation. No militant group has stepped forward to claim the Manipur attack so far.

Assam Rifles Director General Lt. Gen. Vikas Lakhera shared his grief on the force’s social media. He honored the fallen heroes and sent condolences to their families, calling their sacrifice a supreme one.

Security teams wasted no time responding. A large group of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police, led by top officers, rushed to the scene. They’re now running massive search operations across the area to track down the attackers. The zone is cordoned off as forces hunt for clues in this latest episode of unrest in Manipur’s security challenges.

In related news from the Imphal Valley, police nabbed six militants from banned outfits over the last day across three districts. This crackdown comes amid ongoing efforts to curb armed groups fueling Manipur insurgency.

Three key members of the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) got arrested at their homes in Imphal West. Authorities identified them as Leishangthem Tondon Singh, 34; Leishangthem Anand Singh, 34; and Heikham Hemchandra Singh, 41. Officers seized two self-loading rifles, two modified .303 rifles, an INSAS rifle, nine magazines, and 99 rounds of ammo from them.

Another PWG fighter, Taorem Tomchou Meitei, alias Pena, 45, fell into custody in Andro, Imphal East. In Thoubal district, police picked up an active member of the People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) from Ichan Khunou.

They also arrested Khoinaijam Bhumeshwor Singh, 24, from the banned Socialist Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (SOREPA) in Samaram Mayai Leikai, Thoubal. He had a dummy gun and three cartridges with him.

These arrests highlight the relentless push by security forces to dismantle militant networks in Manipur’s volatile regions.
