Two killed, 15 injured as tractor-trolley overturns in MP’s Morena

A tractor‑trolley carrying pilgrims overturned near Nandapura in Sabalgarh, Morena district, on Sunday afternoon, killing two people and injuring 18 others. The crash happened as devotees were heading back from the Kaila Devi temple after the Navratri and Diwali celebrations.
According to Sub‑Divisional Officer Raj Krishna, the driver tried to lower the loaded trolley onto a steep slope while the tractor was in neutral gear. The vehicle lost control on a sharp turn and tumbled. The frightening incident involved 17 passengers, including two women and a 12‑year‑old child who died. The other 18 survivors sustained injuries ranging from minor cuts to critical fractures.
The deceased were identified as Tulsi Bai, 23, the driver’s wife, and Sanjna, 12, the driver’s brother’s daughter. Both were from the nearby Ramkalan village. Several wounded families, such as Preeti (17), Mithilesh (32), Neetu (28), and Kammoda (55), were also from the same area and were transported to Sabalgarh Civil Hospital. Three patients with severe fractures were later sent to Morena District Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police seized the tractor‑trolley for investigation. After a post‑mortem, a MERG (Medical Examiner/Forensic Investigation Report) has been filed and the investigation continues. The incident adds to a string of tragedies involving tractor‑trolleys in Madhya Pradesh, where these vehicles are often used illegally to carry passengers.
Earlier this year, a similar crash in Gwalior district killed three pilgrims and injured 15. Despite warnings from the state’s transport department, the practice remains common in rural areas because there are few safer alternatives for pilgrim transport.
The tragedy in Morena underscores the need for stricter enforcement of passenger transport rules and better safety options for pilgrims traveling to popular shrines like Kaila Devi.
