Tragic House Collapse in Jaipur Claims One Life, Leaves Woman Injured
In the heart of Jaipur’s old city, a crumbling old house came crashing down early Thursday morning, trapping two women under heavy debris. The incident happened around 7 a.m. in the Subhash Chowk Police Station area, turning a quiet neighborhood into a scene of chaos and heartbreak.
One of the victims, 60-year-old Dhannibai, sadly lost her life at the spot. Her relative, Sunita (35), survived but suffered a broken leg and facial injuries. Family members say they called for help right away after the Jaipur house collapse, but the rescue team didn’t arrive until 9 a.m.—a full two hours later. "We informed them immediately, but no one came on time," said a family member, highlighting the frustrating delay in rescue operations.
Luckily, the two young children who lived in the house were playing outside and escaped unharmed. Tarun Mahawar, a relative, rushed to the scene after locals alerted him about the old building collapse.
This isn’t an isolated case in Jaipur’s unsafe buildings hotspot. Just days earlier, another mansion in Subhash Chowk fell, killing a father and his daughter. The area is riddled with dilapidated structures, raising big questions about safety in Jaipur’s old city.
After the recent tragedies, the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) stepped up by preparing a list of 48 dangerous buildings. They even sealed eight in the nearby Kishanpol area to prevent more collapses. The house in question was home to Dhannibai, Sunita, and a housekeeper. The owner, who lives close by, knew about the building’s poor condition but did nothing to fix it.
Local residents Pratap Singh and Ghanshyam Soni shared a heartbreaking detail: Sunita was screaming for help from under the rubble, but immediate aid never came. "She was trapped and calling out, but the response was too slow," they said.
Hawamahal Zone Deputy Commissioner Seema Chaudhary addressed the concerns, saying the JMC has issued notices to owners of all dilapidated buildings in Jaipur. Teams are now conducting surveys to identify risks, and announcements urge people to leave unsafe homes. Some families have already moved to government-provided safe buildings.
The delayed rescue and ongoing issues with unsafe buildings have left locals furious. They’re demanding more accountability from the Jaipur Municipal Corporation and property owners to stop these deadly old house collapses once and for all. As Jaipur grapples with its aging infrastructure, calls for urgent action grow louder to protect lives in the old city.
