Udhayanidhi Stalin inspects flood-mitigation work in Chennai as monsoon intensifies

On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin walked the flood‑prone streets of Duraiapakkam in Chennai, inspecting the city’s flood‑mitigation work as Monsoon rains grow stronger across Tamil Nadu.

The city has been hit by short, sharp downpours that have caused intermittent flooding. In response, the Greater Chennai Corporation and partner agencies have stepped up precautionary actions. Udhayanidhi Stalin looked at desilting and storm‑water drainage projects, talked with engineers and civic officials, and told them to keep drainage systems ready in case the rain intensifies.

Earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin visited the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority’s (TNSDMA) Command and Control Centre at Ezhilagam. He also chaired a high‑level video call with district collectors, urging them to act fast to reduce flood damage and keep residents safe in low‑lying areas.

Since the Northeast Monsoon began on Oct. 16, Tamil Nadu has received an average of 12 mm of rainfall. Heavy showers have battered Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, and the Nilgiris. The Chief Minister inspected the worst‑affected southern and Delta districts, including Theni, where heavy rain and flash floods have disrupted life and business.

His orders include moving people from flood‑prone zones to relief camps immediately and keeping rescue and rehabilitation teams on standby 24/7. He also stressed that harvest work must continue unhindered and that paddy procurement in the Delta districts of Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam—especially in rain‑hit Vedaranyam—should be swift, protecting farmers’ livelihoods.

“All relief camps need enough food, drinking water, medical supplies, and sanitation so no one suffers from lack of basic services,” the Chief Minister emphasized.

Revenues, Public Works, Health and Electricity departments, plus the TNSDMA control room, are monitoring real‑time rainfall data and coordinating relief efforts across districts. Residents in Theni, Madurai and Ramanathapuram are warned to stay alert, as heavy rain is expected to continue for the next two days, raising river and reservoir levels statewide.
