Scottish First Minister welcomes Palestinians arriving for medical treatment

Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney has reached out with a warm open letter to Palestinians from Gaza who are arriving in the country for urgent medical treatment. He addressed the message directly to children, families, and students, speaking on behalf of all Scots.

Swinney expressed deep shock at the devastating events in Gaza over the past two years. “No one should have to endure the deep trauma and suffering that you and your loved ones have faced,” he wrote. He promised that the Scottish Government will keep pushing for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, increased humanitarian aid, and an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories.

Drawing on Scotland’s long tradition of opening its doors to people from across the globe, Swinney assured the newcomers that they’ll find friendly neighbors and support in local communities. “There are a wide range of services to help make your time here more comfortable,” he added. He also highlighted Scotland’s strong solidarity with the Palestinian people, rooted in values of justice and equality. “You’ll see plenty of signs supporting Palestine around the country, and I hope that helps you feel at home.”

This heartfelt message arrives amid escalating violence in Gaza. Israeli air and ground operations have ramped up around Gaza City, the territory’s biggest urban hub. Al Jazeera reports that at least 91 Palestinians died in strikes on Sunday alone, including families hiding in homes and those fleeing from northern Gaza.

Out of those killed, 76 lost their lives in attacks on residential buildings, displacement shelters, tents, and even a truck full of civilians ordered to evacuate. Among the victims were relatives of Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital—his brother, sister-in-law, and their children died when their family home was hit.

Hamas slammed the strikes as a “bloody terrorist message” aimed at scaring doctors into abandoning the city. In a separate incident, an Israeli strike targeted a truck in Gaza City’s Nasr neighborhood, killing at least four people on board, according to Al Jazeera.
