Pakistani troops have pushed into Zehri, a town in Khuzdar district, for the third straight week, and locals say the streets feel deserted and scary.
Residents say their phones and internet no longer work, and road patrols have locked the entrance to Zehri. With no links to nearby towns, the area feels cut off.
The army set up a camp inside Zehri Hospital and told families that have young men to come there. Those who ignore the order face “serious consequences,” a community member says.
In Norgama and surrounding villages, soldiers have raided homes, taken suspects into custody, and carried out “enforced disappearances.”
People fear that the latest wave of force comes after airstrikes on September 15 and 27 that killed several civilians, including two women.
The deaths have sparked anger from Baloch rights groups and local politicians. They demand the Pakistani army stop attacks, free the missing, and restore communications so civilians can live normally again.
Apart from the air strikes, troops blew up two hotels and set fire to shops in Zehri Bazaar. One hotel, the Pyala Hotel, was under the gunfire of armored tanks, and another was completely leveled.
Human rights organizations warn that the turmoil threatens the safety of ordinary people and could deepen the tensions in Balochistan. The military says it is targeting militants, but many protest that the crackdown only adds to the fear among families living there.
