“Unfair to entire OBC community”: Congress’ Vijay Wadettiwar slams Maharashtra govt’s resolution on Maratha caste certificate

In Nagpur, a large rally drew thousands of people on Friday to protest a new Maharashtra government decision. The state passed a resolution on September 2 that lets members of the Maratha community register as Kunbis, a lower‑casting group that falls under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar condemned the move, saying it would hurt genuine OBC families and widen the problem of fake claims. “This resolution unfairly threatens the rights of real OBCs,” Wadettiwar told . He urged the state to cancel the order and called it a chance to fix the issue before public anger escalates.

NCP‑SCP leader Anil Deshmukh joined the march and warned that even if the government promises not to harm OBCs, the new policy could hurt them in education, jobs and politics. Deshmukh demanded the resolution be overturned or the protest could grow stronger.

The rally, dubbed the “Bhavya Morcha,” sees OBC groups across Nagpur voice fears that more people could gain access to reserved seats, diluting opportunities for those already at a disadvantage.

Both leaders insist the government must reverse the ruling, or else the protests will intensify. They highlighted that the BJP’s former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had assured that OBCs would not suffer, yet the Maratha reservation move contradicts those assurances.

The OBC community’s concerns focus on protecting access to education, political representation and employment opportunities. They appeal that the state act swiftly, canceling the resolution before the situation worsens.
