Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran voiced his shock over the tragic Karur stampede that killed 38 people at a political rally. He shared heartfelt condolences for the families and called on the state government to provide fair compensation and support to those affected.
The deadly crowd crush happened Saturday during a rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and popular actor Vijay. In a post on X, Nagenthran described the news as heartbreaking, noting more than 30 lives lost. He directed BJP leaders to rush to hospitals and offer immediate help to victims and their families. “I pray the injured recover fully and return home soon,” he wrote, while urging authorities to step up with proper aid.
Eyewitnesses painted a chaotic picture of the Karur stampede, highlighting how quickly things spiraled out of control. Nanda Kumar, who was there, told that managing the massive crowd proved impossible. Vijay had promised to arrive by 11 a.m., but his delay left fans waiting in the heat, many with kids in tow and growing frustrated. “People came excited to see a star, but this turned deeply distressing,” Kumar said. He stressed the need for better planning at such events, even if safety measures are in place—overcrowding can overwhelm everything. “Even if ten times more people show up than expected, it’s a serious mistake,” he added, praying the Tamil Nadu government supports everyone impacted.
Another witness, Suriya, described the nightmare firsthand: Ambulances struggled to reach the scene amid the tight-packed crowd, with barely any room to move. “It took forever to get people out,” he told , underscoring the panic that gripped the rally.
Zakir, a relative of one victim, pointed to the actor’s delayed arrival—Vijay was set for 9 a.m. but showed up late—as a key factor in the Karur stampede. He described huge rushes, especially near Thirukoilure, packed with young people, women, and children. “These events are no place for families—it’s too dangerous and heart-wrenching,” Zakir shared with , his voice heavy with grief.
In response to the Tamil Nadu stampede tragedy, Chief Minister MK Stalin acted swiftly. He announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each family of the 36 confirmed victims, including eight children and 16 women. Injured survivors get Rs 1 lakh each for medical treatment. Stalin also set up a one-member inquiry commission led by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to probe the incident and deliver a full report.
The CM expressed profound sadness in his statement, calling the loss “irreparable” and vowing top-notch care for hospital patients. “This shakes our hearts—my deepest sympathies to the grieving families,” he said, as the government mobilizes relief for the Vijay rally aftermath.
