Extortionist wanted in Punjab brought back from UAE with CBI help

Indian authorities have successfully extradited a fugitive extortionist from the UAE, thanks to close coordination between the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Interpol. Parminder Singh, who also goes by the aliases Nirmal Singh and Pindi, faces serious charges from the Punjab Police, including extortion, violations of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for allegedly funding terrorist activities, attempted murder, and criminal intimidation.

The CBI stepped in earlier this year at the request of Punjab Police. On June 13, they issued a Red Notice through Interpol, which alerts law enforcement agencies worldwide to track and locate wanted individuals like Singh. UAE authorities arrested him soon after, and officials decided to send him back to India for trial.

Red Notices play a key role in global crime-fighting, helping police around the world catch fugitives. As India’s National Central Bureau for Interpol, the CBI works with local agencies through the Bharatpol system to make these international arrests happen. In fact, this effort has brought back more than 130 wanted criminals to India over the past few years.

This extradition highlights India’s growing push for stronger ties in international law enforcement. Just earlier this month, India earned a spot on the Interpol Asian Committee for the 2025-29 term. The election came during the 25th Interpol Asian Conference in Singapore, after a multi-stage voting process.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), saying: “Committed to address shared challenges. India has been elected as a member of the INTERPOL Asian Committee for the term 2025-29… India’s membership underscores its commitment to regional cooperation to address common challenges like drug trafficking, cyber crime, terrorism and human trafficking.”

The CBI emphasized that this role marks a milestone in India’s work with global partners to tackle issues like terrorism, cybercrime, and human trafficking. It’s all part of a bigger effort to keep communities safe on an international scale.
