Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stopped by several shops on Tuesday to chat with owners during the GST Savings Festival in Dehradun’s bustling Rajpur Road area.
Dhami took time to hear directly from business owners about their experiences. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for rolling out the new GST rates, calling it a game-changing move that puts people first. The central government has overhauled the GST slabs with major reforms to make things fairer and simpler.
These changes will deliver real savings to millions of families and small traders across the state, Dhami noted. He urged shopkeepers to pass on the lower GST benefits straight to customers and pushed for more promotion of local, homemade products as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat drive for self-reliant India.
To spread the word, Dhami announced an ongoing awareness campaign about the new GST rates that runs through September 29. Ministers, lawmakers, and officials will join in, sharing details at community spots so everyone gets the full scoop on how these tax slabs cut costs and boost everyday life.
Timing the GST reforms right before the festive season is a smart play, Dhami added—it means more money in people’s pockets and fresh energy for Uttarakhand’s economy.
The updates stem from the GST Council’s 56th meeting earlier this month and kicked in on Monday. They swap the old four-rate setup for a cleaner system with just two main slabs: 5% and 18%. Luxury and sin goods keep their 40% rate.
Experts say this streamlined GST structure will simplify rules for businesses, drop prices for shoppers, spark manufacturing growth, and help sectors from farming and cars to fast-moving consumer goods and green energy. Overall, it aims to ease the cost of living, empower small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), expand the tax base, and fuel growth that benefits everyone.
