VGRC seminar highlights India, Gujarat’s roadmap to mission 500 GW, Net Zero by 2030

Gujarat’s energy plans are moving fast. On Oct. 10, officials in Gandhinagar—alongside national leaders—announced new steps to hit 500 GW of clean power by 2030, a key part of India’s Net Zero strategy. The push was highlighted at the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference, where a seminar titled “UrjaVarta on Mission 500 GW: Leapfrogging towards Net Zero” drew a crowd that included Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai.

The discussion focused on cutting carbon emissions and cutting electricity bills for everyday consumers. Panelists said developing renewable projects through open bids will help thermal power companies sell cleaner energy to the grid. By swapping fossil‑fuel use for renewables, the plan aims to balance the cost of power for distribution companies and customers alike. Achieving 500 GW of non‑fossil capacity by 2030, the delegates said, sets a solid foundation for the “Viksit Bharat” vision of 2047.

Key voices at the session included CEA Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad, former CERC Chair P. K. Pujari, Norway’s ex‑Environment Minister Erik Solheim, GTU Vice‑Chancellor Rajul Gajjar, former GERC Chairman Anand Kumar, and Zodiac Energy’s CMD Kunj Shah. Their mix of local, national and international experience underscored Gujarat’s growing influence in India’s energy transition.

Earlier the same day, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel opened the first session of the conference at Ganpat University in Mehsana. The Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) hosted a talk on “Critical Minerals: Opportunities in New Emerging Sectors,” again with the CM in attendance. GMDC Managing Director Roopwant Singh presented a cheque worth over ₹237.67 crore to the chief minister—signifying fresh investment in mineral and energy developments. The conference, running on Oct. 9‑10, signals a clear push for green growth and economic expansion in the region.
