Vice President CP Radhakrishnan Takes Oath as Rajya Sabha Chairman
New Delhi, September 12: In a significant moment for Indian politics, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan stepped into his new role as Rajya Sabha Chairman today. The Rajya Sabha secretariat announced that he officially assumed charge after a grand oath-taking ceremony.
President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath to Radhakrishnan at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking a smooth transition in the upper house of Parliament. This comes as Radhakrishnan continues his duties as India’s Vice President, a position he took up earlier.
Right after the swearing-in, Radhakrishnan honored India’s leaders by paying floral tributes at the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, and Chaudhary Charan Singh. These gestures highlight his respect for the nation’s freedom fighters and key figures who shaped modern India.
He then headed to the Parliament House Complex, where Union Ministers, Deputy Chairman Harivansh, and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General P.C. Mody welcomed him warmly. At Prerna Sthal, Radhakrishnan offered tributes to statues of prominent national leaders and freedom fighters who played crucial roles in India’s independence and growth.
To celebrate his first day, he planted a sapling in the Parliament House Complex, symbolizing fresh beginnings and commitment to a greener future. This eco-friendly step adds a positive touch to his entry into the Rajya Sabha leadership.
Radhakrishnan entered the main Parliament building through Shardul Dwar and formally took charge as Chairman. Floor leaders from various political parties met him, showing unity across the political spectrum.
Key figures present included Kiren Rijiju, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs; Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha; Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Law & Justice; and Dr. L. Murugan, Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs.
This appointment strengthens the Rajya Sabha’s operations, with Radhakrishnan bringing his experience to guide parliamentary debates and decisions. As India focuses on key issues like economic growth and national unity, his role as Rajya Sabha Chairman will be closely watched.
