‘Victory for democracy’: Congress candidate Vaishnav Suresh on Kerala local body poll win after legal battle

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 13 (LatestNewsX) – Congress hopeful Vaishnav Suresh called her win in the city’s local elections a “triumph of democracy and truth” on Saturday, after her nomination, which had been initially rejected, was reinstated thanks to a Kerala High‑Court ruling.
Suresh ousted the incumbent Corporation councillor Amshu Vamadevan, who had switched from his original seat to contest Muttada but was defeated by the newcomer. The Muttada constituency had long been a stronghold of the CPI‑M.
Once the early returns confirmed her success, Vaishnav expressed that she was “very happy” and described the result as a clear signal from the electorate. She said, “This is a victory for democracy. Truth will always triumph, and it has done so here. People knew what was happening,” and added that she had “fought a good fight.”
Her candidacy gained statewide attention when her nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny on technical grounds, prompting protests from the Congress that claimed the decision was biased and politically driven. Vaishnav then turned to the High Court, which after reviewing her case, obliged the authorities to accept her nomination, allowing her to re‑enter the race.
The legal showdown, combined with her youth, elevated Vaishnav into the spotlight for the Congress campaign in the area. Party leaders framed her situation as an illustration of institutional injustice, rallying support around the defense of democratic principles.
After the court order, her campaign concentrated on governance matters and the broader theme of defending the democratic process. Political analysts note that the ruling in her favor is significant not only for the Congress but also for local elections overall, where procedural disputes and legal challenges have been prominent elsewhere.
Her victory is regarded as a morale booster for the party, especially among young voters and first‑time candidates. Congress leaders welcomed the outcome, asserting that it reinforced confidence in both the judiciary and the electoral system, and praised voters for “seeing through attempts to deny a candidate her legitimate right to contest.”
For Vaishnav, this marks the beginning of her political career under close public scrutiny. She reiterated her pledge to serve the electorate, promising to honor the trust placed in her and address local concerns. “This mandate belongs to the people who stood by me,” she said, emphasizing that winning at the ballot box is only the first step in her public journey.
