WI’s Shai Hope completes 9,000 runs in international cricket, ends six-year wait for Test fifty

Shai Hope marked a career milestone during the second Test against India at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. The right‑handed West Indies batsman crossed the 9,000‑run mark in international matches, finishing the game unbeaten on 66* from 103 balls. He hit eight fours and two sixes at a strike rate of more than 64, helping West Indies chase a tight target.
Hope now has 9,057 runs in 236 international games, averaging 38.05. The tally includes 21 centuries and 42 fifties, with a best score of 170. His most successful format is the ODI, where he has racked up 5,879 runs in 142 matches, averaging 50.24, 18 centuries and a highest of 170. In T20Is he has 1,210 runs from 51 matches, averaging 28.13 and a strike rate of 137.65, with a single century and seven fifties, his best being 102*.
Despite these solid numbers, Hope’s Test record is still a work in progress. He has scored 1,968 runs in 43 Tests at an average of 25.23, with two centuries and six fifties. His last half‑century came over six years ago, and his only Test centuries came in a 2017 win over England.
In the match, West Indies fell behind early. India declared at 518/5 after Marnus Labuschagne and others produced a big partnership, while West Indies were bundled out for 248 in their first innings. Shai Hope played a key role in the fightback, holding the bat for a calm 66 alongside John Campbell’s 87, as West Indies managed a lead of 173/2 at the end of the day.
India’s innings was dominated by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. Jaiswal hit 175 off 258 balls, while Gill finished on 129* off 196 balls, both scoring centuries in a huge opening partnership that set the tone for the day’s highs. The West Indies’ bowlers, led by Jomel Warrican, were unable to contain the Indian attack, with Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja taking wickets.
