N. Korean hacking group Lazarus behind 31 attacks over past year

Seoul, Nov 30 (LatestNewsX) – AhnLab Inc. released a report stating that the North‑Korean hacking outfit Lazarus is believed to have carried out no fewer than 31 cyberattacks in the last year, giving it the top spot among advanced persistent threat groups. Kimsuky, another North‑Korean backed group, followed with 27 incidents, while the country as a whole was linked to 86 attacks worldwide. China, Russia, India and Pakistan accounted for 27, 18, 18 and 17 incidents respectively.

The firm cautioned that the real number of operations could be higher, as APT actors use sophisticated techniques that can evade detection. The report arrived amid fresh concerns that Lazarus was behind a recent massive breach at South Korean exchange Upbit, in which roughly 45 billion won (about US$30.6 million) of cryptocurrency was transferred to an unauthorized wallet. The tactics reportedly mirrored those used in a 2019 hit that saw 58 billion won worth of Ethereum stolen from the same platform.

Authorities plan to conduct an on‑site investigation of the exchange, convinced that Lazarus was responsible. Dunamu, Upbit’s parent company, confirmed that it had moved 44.5 billion won of Solana‑based assets to an illicit address and pledged to reimburse the full amount from its own holdings.
