Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha shared his excitement about the latest GST reforms during a visit to Agartala’s bustling Maharajganj market on Wednesday. He said the changes have sparked joy among buyers and sellers alike, thanks to lower prices on everyday goods. People in the market couldn’t stop thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making life easier.
After chatting with traders and shoppers at what he called the state’s biggest marketplace, Saha painted a bright picture for India’s future. “India can become the world’s top economy,” he declared, crediting Modi’s leadership for steering the nation forward.
The reforms, announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman under Modi’s guidance, kicked in on September 22. Saha explained how they simplify the old, messy tax system. Back in the day, businesses faced a barrage of taxes—from factory levies and road taxes to VAT and extra charges for moving goods across states. When GST first rolled out, it stirred up plenty of confusion.
But now, things look different. The GST structure has slimmed down from five complicated slabs to just two straightforward ones, easing the burden on everyone. Saha pointed out how critics once warned that Modi’s tax push would tank the economy. Instead, India’s ranking jumped from 11th to 4th globally, proving the reforms’ success.
Looking ahead, Saha highlighted Modi’s vision for a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047. He even predicted that by 2050 or beyond, India could lead the world in economic power.
These updates stem from the 56th GST Council meeting earlier this month. They replace the old four-rate setup with a cleaner two-slab system: 5 percent and 18 percent for most items. Luxury and sin goods, like high-end cars or tobacco, stick with the 40 percent rate to keep things balanced. Overall, the changes aim to boost the Indian economy while helping regular folks save on shopping.
