West Bengal CID arrests one in Assam for Rs 35 lakh cyber fraud

Kolkata, Nov. 27 — According to the West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID), a man from Assam was taken into custody for running a fraudulent investment app, police said Thursday.
The arrest took place in Assam on Wednesday, with the suspect named Zahirul Islam captured near Dispur. His residence is in Kamrup district. The CID has requested that he be transported to West Bengal on transit remand.
Sources say the scammers set up a bogus app, masquerading as a legitimate stock‑market and mutual‑fund investment firm. They reportedly defrauded ₹35 lakh from Dr. Rajkumar Bhattacharya, a Barasat doctor in North 24 Parganas.
So far, the CID has nabbed four other members of the plot. The latest raid in Assam led to Zahirul Islam’s arrest. Investigators note that the group used Facebook ads to lure investors into the fake app. Dr. Bhattacharya was drawn into a WhatsApp group promising online investment training. Over more than two months, he was persuaded to invest in ten installments, totalling ₹35 lakh.
After realizing he had been duped, Dr. Bhattacharya lodged a complaint at the Barasat Cyber Crime Police Station. The Calcutta High Court then transferred the investigation to the CID.
Earlier in the case, four individuals were apprehended: Debashis Roy was seized in March, Prosenjit Ranjan Nath in June from Alipore, and Amit Ghosh and Riaz Ahmed in July from Garden Reach. Amit Ghosh works as a bank employee. Interrogations of these four yielded the name of Zahirul Islam, prompting the CID’s Assam raid.
