Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary turns into a winter paradise for tourists

Jamnagar’s Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary is alive again as thousands of migratory birds arrive this winter. Nestled just 12 km from the city and covering about 6.5 sq km, the sanctuary is a hotspot for nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers from across India and abroad.

The sanctuary hosts more than 300 species of migratory birds. Birds from Afghanistan, Europe, Africa, Iran‑Iraq, and even Siberia flock to Khijadiya each year. They come for the rich food supply, the favorable climate, and the diverse habitats—freshwater lakes, saltwater pans, and marshlands.

“Winter is the peak season,” says Dakshaben Vaghasiya, the range forest officer. “The sanctuary turns into a paradise for those who want to see and photograph these birds.” The sound of chirping and the sight of birds fluttering against the green backdrop add to the sanctuary’s beauty, especially at sunrise.

Visitors have shared their excitement about the experience. Mittal Rana and Riddhi, both from Ahmedabad, praised the peaceful setting and the chance to see a wide variety of species up close. Many tourists leave the sanctuary with unforgettable memories and striking photographs.

Each year, lakhs of tourists come to witness Khijadiya’s vivid landscapes and vibrant wildlife. The sanctuary’s unique ecosystem and its reputation as a haven for migratory birds make it one of Gujarat’s—and India’s—most beloved natural attractions.
