Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared warm wishes with Indians on Thursday for the fourth day of Shardiya Navratri, a vibrant Hindu festival honoring Goddess Kushmanda. In a heartfelt post on X, formerly Twitter, Modi prayed to the radiant goddess, who glows like the sun. “May she bless all devotees with prosperity and happiness, and let her divine light brighten everyone’s life,” he wrote.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta joined the celebrations with her own message on X. She highlighted how Maa Kushmanda, the fourth form of Goddess Durga, created the universe with her boundless energy. “Worshiping her brings mental peace, physical strength, and the inner power to tackle any challenge,” Gupta said. She added, “On this holy day, may Maa Kushmanda’s blessings fill lives with joy, wealth, and serenity. Jai Mata Di!”
For those new to the festival, Goddess Kushmanda’s name breaks down to “Ku” for tiny, “Ushma” for warmth or energy, and “Anda” for cosmic egg—symbolizing her role in bringing life to the universe. Devotees revere her as the ruler of the solar system in Hindu beliefs. She rides a fierce lioness and holds eight powerful items in her hands: a lotus and water pot in one set, plus a bow, arrow, nectar-filled pot, prayer beads, mace, and discus.
Worshiping Maa Kushmanda is said to help followers overcome illnesses, worries, and flaws, bringing good health and positivity. Thousands of people flocked to temples across India from dawn, offering prayers and joining the festive spirit.
Shardiya Navratri, meaning “nine nights” in Sanskrit, runs for nine days and nights. It celebrates Goddess Durga and her nine forms, called Navdurga. Families and communities light up homes, perform rituals, dance garba, and share special foods to honor the divine feminine energy. This year’s Navratri draws huge crowds as India embraces the traditions of devotion and renewal.
